Re: Didn't shock me.

As someone who gets his medical needs taken care of for free, I don't mind paying my share in taxes to bring that service to others. I don't have any children either, but I don't mind paying taxes to help educate other people's children. I've always felt that way. Its the social contract. I've signed on to it, I've benefitted from it, and I will contribute to it.

The purpose of government is to help the people, and I can't think of any better way to do that than to provide them with services, espececially life-and-death services, that are normally availble only to those who have the disposable income to afford them. And yes, education is as much a life-and-death service as is health care. Without it, those who can't afford education will always be indentured servants to those who can. And that is unacceptable. It is intolerable.

I have benefited from government services, as has every person in this country, even if they claim to be rugged individualists who have convinced themselves they pay their own way in everything. But I will own up to that, and I am not churlish about paying it back. It is my obligation as a citizen and a human being to do so.

I have a duty to my community, to my country, to my fellow man, and that is part of it. That is what I call patriotism.
