I know, some of these are mostly government agencies.

These folks are doing pretty well. New NASA contract for them.

University based and funded, but also doing well:

My husband's company designs broaches... makes tools that go towards the manufacturing of aircraft jet engines. Most probably obsolete now, but in the 80's, his company was chosen by NASA, through P&W, to come up with a tool that broached slots in a disk that enabled blades to be inserted. (don't ask, but NASA and Pratt needed it at the time. lol). The final product was to be used in the shuttle(s).

Just as NASA needed Grumman to come up with a Lunar Module, they are still looking for people/companies big and small to help them out and by doing so... be it in the manufacturing of new, more durable plastics, solar panels, metal aloys, etc., NASA and other companies are benefiting. Space commercialization is obviously still in it's infancy and a distant realization for most. Presently, it's good to be on 'the path' in a good physics/technical university or exhisting space related business, but all you have to do is ask (bad example maybe).

Technology is evolving all the time and so are the sciences. I think it's wonderful that our astronauts can have a salad and a decent meal up there now. *g*
