Space/Science » in reply to Lewis & Clarke to the Moon?

I like the idea

We could send one or more unmanned rovers to explore the lunar poles for a pretty reasonable cost. Those rovers could perform in-situ analysis of the soil looking for traces of ice and other worthwhile resources. They could be the "Lewis and Clarke" of lunar exploration. If they find something worthwhile, that could serve as the justification for further manned exploration.
