Armageddon had the same problem as many movies...
in that it was a series of special effects - mainly explosions - only loosely connected by a flimsy plot. There have been quite a few movies in the past 10 years or so with that problem, notably "Con Air" and "The Rock". Both were awful, but then they had Nick Cage who makes really bad movies most of the time (with the exception of "Raising Arizona.")
