I always found "radiation" to be a vague term, as it covered all ionizing particles.
I had never given the topic much thought until Joe Rothenberg stated that the levels were high enough to prohibit manned flight to Mars. Given that he was responsible for the safety of individuals, and that he wants manned flight, I found his statement disturbing, particularly given his experience with classic shielding technologies, and that he had begun examining electromagnetic shielding.
I assume you're familiar with nitrogen to carbon conversion via radiation. Any idea what the nitrogen level on Mars is?
