As a senior in high school I was the student lab assistant for the Soil Physics department of a larger state university. At the time they were experimenting with measuring various qualities of soil with radiation. Moisture content, various minerals, and some of the structure could be deduced from these readings. Graduate students were really getting off on figuring this stuff out. (Actually, graduate students were really getting off on about everything, including each other, but that's another story.)
I was sent around the state collecting the neutron sources. At that time there wasn't much done to make the stuff safe. So, I loaded up my state-owned vehicle with watermelons to protect me from these sources. Lots of watermelons.
I was a very popular guy when I'd roll back into town. I got to where I'd stop by my friends houses before heading back to the lab.
