Water Is Better & Food Is Mostly Water

Zubrin proposed packing the food supplies around the shelter as a way to save mass by giving shielding material a dual use. It is also my understanding that water is better than metals at shielding on a lb per lb basis (and possibly volume basis) because fewer and less dangerous secondary particles are produced when the high speed particles impact the shielding material.
