Re: The stereo anaglyph shows it to be a depression

Perhaps the Meridiani structure is formed the same way as features on Mars discussed in this sci.astro thread but at a larger scale:

From: Graham Orme (anomaly@marsattack.com)
Subject: unusual Martian feature
Newsgroups: sci.astro
Date: 2000/07/08
http://groups.google.com/groups?th=5d2c1ede1c3b2157

The first feature discussed here is at the link:

Mounds knobs.

(The links given in the first post of the thread are no longer active.)

However, is this feature with the circular rings a depression or a raised region in the MOC image?

In a later post to the thread I suggested an analogy to strandlines:

Ancient Shorelines on Fremont Island
http://www.wiley.com/college/ford_test/case6/images/tour_2/2_8.html

This could work whether the feature(s) are depressions or raised regions.
I noted a similar image at the Martian polar layered deposits:

Additional Images of South Polar Layered Deposits near Proposed Mars
Surveyor '98 Landing Site,
http://www.msss.com/mars_images/moc/3_9_98_release/9500/index.html

Again I can't tell if this is a depressed or raised region.

I occurred to me that maybe the polar layered deposits are themselves strand or shorelines according to the theory of Baker et.al. of periodic oceans in the northern plains of Mars.
