Imagery

The THEMIS team is doing such a good job with releasing the IR that I don't mind waiting for them to work on the color images instead of them hiring new people to do it now.

Its true that man is a visual animal, and that color imagery could prevent a whole lot of needless bs "analysis" about "watery" Mars, but then of course I'm not all that interested in Mars... and with luck, the Mars Express images will be coming in by what, 2003-2004?

Scott Hubbard once stated his desire that automatic crater counting software be developed for use against the Mars imagery. Where is it? Who is in charge of the effort? Who is developing that software? What are the funding levels? When will the programs be operational? When will the results be released?

Aside from the urgent need for this data for planetary protection planning, as it currently sits, any estimates of the age of any formation on Mars are pretty weak, if not complete bs. Thus the explanations for the formative processes are pretty weak as well, if not complete bs.

By the way, what are the chances that the THEMIS release context software could be provided to Malin for their use? The strata which the impact exposed are real nice, but now where the ef' are they? Mars is a big planet after all, and there will be variations in the strata.
