Having served in both the Army and Air Force, I know full well what our sons might be facing. When both of my sons enlisted, I made sure they realized that a war could break out during their time in service. I didn't want them to go in with false illusions about getting money for college while facing little actual risk. I told them to prepare every day as if they had to go to war. If hostilities broke out, there might not be time to really prepare then. I hope this doesn't go to the point of ground forces but it might. Very dangerous work, being on the ground during a war, especially against an enemy that has spent the last 20 years fighting first the Soviets then one another. Afghanistan has very rough terrain, too. Very good place to defend, extremely difficult to attack. Tell your son to start his PT now so he can hit the ground running at Basic Training. Tell him to be ready at any time should the call come. What MOS did he enlist for, 11B? That was my MOS, 11B2P, Airborne Infantry. Send your son off with pride, and with the knowledge that he has our best wishes and gratitude for his service.
