Hearts and minds

Guerrilla warfare in a mountainous environment is perhaps the toughest to fight, with the possible exception of urban guerrilla warfare. I admired the Afghani's resolve and courage as they fought for a decade to drive out the Soviets. I sympathize with the plight of the nation's people and hold no ill will against them. Hearing of the suffering in the refugee camps saddens me. However, it also opens an opportunity to help stabilize the region and weaken the Taliban at the same time. If America is seem as the cause of their hardship or as a nation that worsens their hardship, we'll further turn millions of desperate people against us. From those people will come the next generation of terrorists. However, if we very publicly go into those camps with food and medical help, we might be able to show the refugees that we aren't their enemy. Few things build friendship better than saving someone's child from dying of starvation or disease. Doing this would require substantial cooperation from the nations hosting the refugees like Pakistan. This could be difficult for political reasons but should be explored.
