Is it a battle, which could also mean fight to the death?

Or is it a "I see free debate as a flight testing process for ideas where flaws can be exposed and perhaps repaired"

If the latter one has to assume that there can be room on both sides for "flaws" and "repairs".

Civilised debate is the latter. Mindless ditribes are a result of the former.
