Re: Well Thank You Very Much Tom!

Except that his prediction seems remarkably similar to many novels, with a particular nod to Tom Clancy.

Is massive UNconditional aid to Israel a bad idea - yes. Conditional aid would certainly put an end to the carte-blanche way of doing things.

Is the US too involved in other countries? Well, when you are the world's biggest power, history shows that you either have A) an obligation to humanity, B) An obligation to your business and foreign partners interests or C) An opportunity to try to reshape the world as you see fit.

History also shows that when superpowers try C) they screw up royally...
France - SE Asia
Spain - S. America
Britain - oh, most of the empire, Palestine, Afghanistan to name but two
USSR - Eastern Europe, Afghanistan (again, didnt learn from above)
USA - Phillipines, Haiti, Panama, Nicaragua (I'll leave SE Asia alone with the initial blame on the French)

WW2 was A+B. Soviets tried C but ultimately failed.
US/UK/France tried A+B with Germany and Japan and it worked.

Lately we have been trying A and B, and to some extent it is working - Balkans, Sierra Leone, Kuwait.

The USA has too many political, business and humanitarian interests in the world to try to back out now.
