Establishing a "beachhead" inside Afghanistan will be critical to continuing this effort. Obviously the ideal base would include a large airstrip. Are there any that we haven't already destroyed? Would a base without an existing airstrip be as useful? How much runway does an A-10 need? A C-130? Obviously helicopters don't need any, and I KNOW how much runway a B-52 needs (all you can get!)

Maybe a permanent base would be a good idea. I remember how astonished I was when I learned (in college!) that we had a permanent U.S. military base on Cuban soil. So there is some precedent for this...
