I'd say let's go for it then. Find a flat spot far away from the mountains as possible (no nearby high ground). This may not be easy. Set up a near-permanent base, and surround it with electric fences and enough hellish devices and air support to keep any attackers from getting close. Dig in, raise our flag, and stay put. Not only a great strategic location, but a pretty good propaganda coup.
You do know, of course, that after three months the electric fence will be completely surrounded by refugee tents...
