Having read this thread, I'm going to go do what I ususally do when I see a letter to the editor from my neighbor, an abortion foe: I'll be writing another check to the National Abortion Rights Action League.
I'm glad you guys think these things are so easy. It is, of course, always about money. That's why your mothers got that bonus for having you.
Btw, here's another spin on the ethics of prenatal testing and acting on its results. Older fathers stand a greater chance of siring offspring who later develop schizophrenia, which tends to run in families. Would older fathers have a legal right to require the women they impregnate to submit to amniocentisis? (It's not a procedure without risk to the mother or the fetus, particularly if, like me, there's an Rh factor incompatibility issue.) Should all men over the age of 40 be sterilized to prevent us from having to deal with this issue? Should abortion in the case of an anomaly of this type be ruled out because the offspring will lead a happy life ("happy life" being defined as "I'm alive, therefore I'm happy")? If not one dime of tax money is to go for abortions, will any go for the life-long mental health care of low-income people with schizophrenia whose parents might have chosen a second-trimester abortion had they had the money?
Have a nice day.
Regards--
Mary Anne
