Not just wimpy Mafioso undercover. Past US intelligence operatives during WWII posing as Nazi collaborators killed people or served as mistresses and prostitutes. Back then war meant WAR. Survival vs obliteration. Read the multi-volume "Bodyguard of Lies" which covers this and the Enigma code breaking.
