Bernard Goldberg-Marvin Kalb debate on PBS

Mr. Goldberg's Bias has reportedly reached #1 on the bestseller list, and I think this work was cited below as the definitive and final proof that our media are liberal.

I haven't read the book. The gist of Mr. Golberg's argument, at least as articulated on the Newshour, is that journalists "marginalize conservative views," and that media figures do this when they ID conservatives with that label, but fail to do so for liberals.

He then cited the example of the impeachment proceeding when ABC's Peter Jennings tagged several pols as "conservatives" but didn't offer any labels for such as California's Barbara Boxer.

His other main argument this evening was that most journalists reported that they voted Democratic in some recent poll. I think the figure was 80%. He claims this is obvious evidence of elitist, liberal journalism.

But Marvin Kalb was having none of it, and I thought that Mr. Goldberg looked a bit chastened when Mr. Kalb noted that his work is "simply not accurate."

If the media were truly liberal, Mr. Kalb wanted to know, why did they lacerate a liberal president?

Mr. Goldberg didn't have an answer for that one, either.
