When I was a kid, I was wondering if I should go to college, and worried that I may get a degree and then want to go into a different line of work*. My dad pointed out that one main virtue of a university degree was that it impressed on potential employers that you were able to start something difficult and see it through. For many kids, going to college is their first experience with being on their own, setting themselves a goal, and working hard to achieve it. Doing this successfully, regardless of the field of study, says something about a person. Looking at it in this light, whether or not the degree has anything to do with the job is almost not relevant.
Of course, if your degree is in beadmaking, that's something else again.
*For the record, that's what ended up happening to me.
