Re: Are university degrees worth the trouble?

If the purpose of your University degree is to allow you to make a living, you are really searching for training and not education.

There is nothing wrong with training, but be honest. We also need people that are in the habit of thinking in our society to direct and guide the well trained technocrats. The ability to think is usually a bi-product of an education. Perhaps it should be an acknowledged goal? I shudder to think of the curriculum this would require; not one blessed course of study that would aid the student in making a living.

An education interested in turning out "an educated man" would be a cry from out of an elitist past and certainly out of step with the demands of the world today. With this sort of a dangerous approach education would cease in its present function of being a farm club for business and industry.

How uncomfortable would we be if we asked students, our own kids, what are going to be when you graduate Johnnie? And we got as an answer, and educated man. Why, would we not be warranted in asking for a refund from his university? We might not be getting our money's worth.
