Alacrity eh? I'll go look that one up and get back to you when I know if that was a dig. ;)
Seriously though, High School really burned me out on the various distopic visions of Orwell, Huxley and Rand. They set up a completely preposterous situation and then continuously bludgeon the reader with dehumanizing situations forced upon the protagonist to make their point.
1984 may have seemed spookily plausable in 1948, but as it became apparent how much of a failure the system of red facisim and the progressively more moderate systems that led up to the fall were, it
really lost it's allure. By the time I read it, The Soviets were now called
Russians, Ukranians, Kasakhs, etc..... Gotta admit though, that the East Germans did a pretty good job of doing a complete Big Brotheresque coverage of their populace.
When I think of possible modern dystopic scenarios I think more of the setting for "Neruomancer" (Gibson) or "The Star Fraction" (McCleod) and
even those aren't so bad. That old school crap just doesn't resonate with me. Who knows, maybe I'm just a naive optimist.
How's that for aclarity of thought.
Yes, I do know what alacrity means
