To young to remember but not too young to learn. I'm well aware of who Pol Pot was. Pol Pot is dead now. North Korea in it's current incarnation under the wise and benevolent leadership of "Dear Leader" is soon to follow. Cuba has become a sort of amusement park where Americans sneak into to SCUBA on pristine sights and sneak home through Mexico with a pocket full of Havanas.
China is ruled by a bunch of Maoist dinosaurs and is concievably still a threat on ideological grounds. That can't last forever though. I'm guessing in about ten to fifteen years, their system will look more like a Britainesque social democracy without the old bag.
I'm not saying the world is free of the possibility of dystopic systems. But I think it's safe to say that the more conventional threats concieved of in the first half of the 20th century aren't gonna be them.
It's much more likely that they'll come from more exotic frontiers of human thought, from the direction nobody is watching. Using our society as an example, were sort of vaccinated aganst any drastic shift in the political ideology. There are antibodies for some kind of totalitarian communism and there are those (like the author that started this little thread) for a laisse-faire theocracy.
Our system oscillates about the contemporary moderate viewpoint and so far has resisted any serious deviation towards one ideology or another keeping things here rather safe and boring.
