I never said this mindset was a conspiracy. If it were, you could point fingers at the leaders and expose them.
If you read "Bias," the author is empathetic that there is no left-wing conspiracy in the media. There is no one in the media who gets up in the morning and decides to give marching orders on how to make conservatives look bad. It isn't necessary. The negative views on conservative are already there, part of the inherent makeup of the average media person. There is no one in the Democratic Party who goes to the press and says, "here's what you are going to say today." They issue press releases, and the natural sympathy of the press towards the liberal position does the rest.
A hundred years ago, in the Deep South, it wasn't necessary for community leaders to go around and tell the population that blacks were inferior. It wasn't necessary to have classes to impart the racist attitudes that were prevalent, or to continually hammer the idea into the heads of the typical southerner. It wasn't necessary to have a "conspiracy" to oppress blacks in the south. The view that whites were better than blacks was bone-deep in many people, and required no further encouragement.
The modern view in the media and academia that "liberal" is good and "conservative" is evil is similarly bone-deep, and many are probably not even aware that they have a prejudice, any more than a fish is aware that it is wet. Surveys reveal many with consistent liberal and left-wing positions who are honestly convinced that they are "moderate" and in the political center.
Hell, I spend half my time on this board rubbing people's noses in the truth about political freedom, and it's still about as productive as reading the newspaper to my dog. And you guys are the SMART ones. The concepts of libertarianism are not even comprehensible to many less-intellectual liberals I have talked to. The paradigm shift is just too drastic.
