<Will on terrorism

George Will is a clever guy, and he omits relevant information in order to make his points.

First is the axiom that one man’s terrorist is another man’s freedom fighter.

Second, Israel is the result of effective terrorist action, which managed to hold onto the issue until Harry S. Truman, President, Democrat, Missouri, decided to recognize it as a state. Jewish “terrorism” was rewarded by their getting a sovereign state.

If Will were to be honest, he would have to say that Israel shouldn’t be there.

Third, there is no other tool available to oppressed people who don’t have an army.

Fourth, one needs to fight the current fights, not those of 50, or 40 or 30 years ago. The Palestinians are not struggling against the right of Israel to exist. That needs restating. The Palestinians are not struggling against the right of Israel to exist. They wish Israel would go away, that’s true. And, they know, and I know, Israel is going to exist. The US guarantees their existence, rightly so.

The current issue, the 21st Century issue, right now, not that of past wars or glories, is fairness for Palestinians. To say that fairness for those folks would jeopardize the existence of Israel is about like saying that fairness for Native Americans would jeopardize the US.

“Terrorism” is a matter of perspective. I’m not saying it’s justified, only understandable. It seems to me to be sort of like a strike in labor relations – a last resort.

Will does have a clue. But that’s all. There's more to it than the only clue he decides to try to use to solve the mystery.
