Reminds me of something I read last September

when the host of "Politically Incorrect" was getting roasted for calling the suicide pilots "brave." Someone over on MSNBC pointed out that given the promises of paradise serviced by scores of women, it really wasn't all that brave an act to kill oneself. If memory serves, the writer asked, "How brave do you have to be to walk through the gates at Disneyland?"

Suicide warriors have been relatively common for some time now. There are countless cases of soldiers sacrifacing their lives in combat to kill the enemy or save their buddies. Thousands of Japanese Kamikazis voluntarily committed suicide to strike out against our forces. Tens of thousands of Japanese soldiers died in suicidal bonzai charges as a last resort. In Korean and Vietnam, our enemies often used human wave tactics that were little more than suicide. My uncle once described being on the receiving end of a human wave attack in Korea before he was captured. Thousands of the enemy died that day. Suicide attacks like the ones we're seeing in Israel have been going on in Sri Lanka since the early 1980s. Again, this tactic is nothing new.

It seems to me that these tactics are being used because they work. Security against car bombs and other such attacks has reduced their success rate so the Palestineans have changed tactics. They have plenty of willing volunteers and they're killing quite a few Israelis. If the suicide attacks didn't work, they'd probably drop them for another tactic. As long as they work and get the big headlines, they'll continue.
