The Australian commandos were engaged and shot at from a number of locations. The battle group was swiftly deployed and are now seeking out and attacking these locations.

Royal Marines from Arbroath-based 45 Commando were today locked in battle with al Qaida and Taliban fighters in eastern Afghanistan, writes Colin Hogarth.

It is the first time since their deployment that the troops have come face to face with the militants.

The men are currently engaged in a battle with what is described as a "substantial force" of enemy fighters in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan.

They are among a force of 1000 coalition troops taking part in Operation Condor -- named after their Arbroath-base, RM Condor.

No British casualties have been reported, although a number of enemy fighters have been killed.

A Ministry of Defence spokesman said the operation involves Australian, American and British ground and air forces.
