Probably shock

...sometimes mistaken for euphoria because of the accompanying effects of adrenline rush. It wouldn't last long enough to result in pain.

A doctor once told me that bleeding to death from a severed major artery is relatively painless, because it's so fast and because of the side-effects of shock.

So, actually, the man interviewed is probably right in a very bent way. Anyone who has psyched him (or her)self up to such a point of religious zeal that he thinks self-detonation is an act of worship is just as nuts as those flagellant lay orders in the Middle Ages who believed beating themselves was a form of prayer. He would feel religious ecstacy at completion of his "act of worship", and wouldn't live long enough for the reality of its consequences to sink in.

So you can't appeal to self-interest to deter these people. Their self-interest has been subverted by fanaticism.

Mary Anne
