There is the opportunity to make millions in the US. And people have done it. That is usually used to illustrate the system is working well. That's a myth.
It's a horrible way to try to demonstrate how well an economic system is working. In ANY economy, socialist, capitalist, communist, there will be people who wind up either owning or controlling large amounts of the resources. ANY economy, in every country.
The thing which has made the US has been the chance of anyone to get to be middle class. To own a house, a car, to educate their kids.
That's what's disappearing for more and more people. In my town a poorer couple who both work with two kids in daycare will never own a house. They can't save enough to make the down payment, and if the don't have parents who can help, they are out of luck.
We've just seen in the US a number of examples of the greedy aspect of unrestrained capitalism. People don't need more money than they can spend. That fuels greed, and that ain't good for anyone. The greed of the executives of these companies sure wasn't good for the people who worked for and invested in these companies.
But don't let 'em tell you about the millionaires. Have 'em tell you about the people who don't read well, who can't sit for long periods of time, and who can make a comfortable living, have health care, buy a house and take a vacation because they are willing to learn and work.
