Only a lunatic is unmoved by innocent casualties

which goes a long way to understanding Stalin's saying, "A single death is a tragedy, a million deaths is a statistic." Stalin, perhaps the worst mass murderer of all time, was a lunatic.

Unfortunately, innocent people have died in virtually every war in history. This is especially likely when military targets are located in crowded areas like neighborhoods, near hospitals, etc. There's no such thing as a "surgical strike" when you're talking about high explosives. Sure, modern precision weapons are far less destructive than the area or carpet bombing used in previous wars but innocent people will still be killed when the targets are located in neighborhoods. Even if we sent in ground forces rather than bombers, innocent people will die in the crossfire.

War is a brutal, senseless, and nasty business. It should be avoided whenever possible. Sad to say, sometimes it becomes unavoidable. (NOTE: He got the date of the Munich Pact wrong - it happened in 1938.)
