Don’t get me wrong. Jimmy Carter is a good guy, and has real achievements in promoting peace and reconciliation among many peoples. He even deserves a Noble Peace Prize. But why now? His principal achievement, the Camp David peace accord, happened 24 years ago!
The Nobel Committee is clearly playing politics within the current framework of the necessary war on terrorism, and noting and approving Jimmy Carter’s pathetic opposition to it. But the truth is that in 2002 George Bush and Tony Blair, with a firm and resolute stand against the terrorists and terror states that threaten our very civilization, are far more deserving of the Nobel Peace Prize than an American ex-President whose exhibited weaknesses have in fact emboldened and encouraged terrorism, both in Iran while Carter was President (one of the very worst in American history, by the way), and in coddling the bloody North Korean dictator in 1995, helping him buy time to secure more dangerous weapons to threaten the South, and others.
