Update on "Send a Student to Minnesota."

Some more text has been added here:

We're glad you made it here. If you read the text below, it will be clear to anyone with a basic command of the English language that NOWHERE does it say that we will send people to Minnesota to register as voters. That's not even possible, and only a fool, or an incredibly irresponsible journalist, would deliberately twist something so out of shape in order to lie to his readers for the sake of a cheap shock headline. Voter registration drives were an important part of the civil rights movement in this country. In the 1960s, people from all over the United States came to the South to help register African-Americans to vote.

Voter registration drives are not illegal, and they also cannot advocate voting for one candidate over another. So what you have here is a deliberate attempt by the right to lie about a voter registration campaign, by falsely saying that we are sending people to Minnesota to vote (again, read the copy below — it's very clear), which should give you as the reader a great deal of pause when you consider who it is that is conjuring up lies about such a campaign, and whether or not you can trust them when they offer you their other interpretations of the news.

Send A Student To Minnesota!

DSA’s national electoral project this year is the Minnesota Senate Election. Together with YDS, DSA’s Youth Section, we are mobilizing to bring young people to Minnesota. Minnesota is one of the few states that allow same day voter registration. We will therefore focus our energy on registering young Minnesotans. Wellstone will need a high percentage of young people to register and vote for him if he is to stave off the campaign that Bush, the Republicans and the Greens are waging against him. He is the Right’s Number One electoral target.

Sorry I misunderstood. I obviously interpreted "we are mobilizing to bring young people to Minnesota" as meaning they were going to bring young people to Minnesota, i.e. from somewhere other than Minnesota. Seems such a silly error when I look at it.

This is what you need to register to vote on Election Day in Minnesota:

...Use one of these for proof...

- A current Minnesota Driver License, learner permit or identification card (or receipt for a new one) with your address

- One of the above with a former address and a utility bill*

- A U.S. passport or military ID card and a utility bill*

- a "Notice of Ineffective Registration" card mailed to you by your county auditor (if you turned in a registration card late)

- someone who is registered in the precinct where you live to vouch for you at the polling place

If you are a student, you can use...

- Student photo ID, registration or fee statement with your current address

- Student photo ID with utility bill*

- Student photo ID if you are on a student housing list on file at the polling place

Seems fairly tight, but I can see a few obvious holes. Can you?
