The Democrats were fighting a losing battle. they could see this, and so panic reigned. They cannot, however, seem to realign their strategy, so the panic continues after the battle is lost.
In such a situation, Republicans are equally bullheaded -- as with just about anyone else whose livelihood is so threatened.
