The environmental movement has gone psychotic, and now has the sole ambition of obliterating human activity in every possible venue. ANY human activity. They need to be ramped down. This is just one of many possible steps toward this goal. I could list a lot of others.
Rob has just mentioned one abuse. The current attempts to "define" a species by their location alone, rather than by any visible or genetic difference, would open the floodgates. ANY animal will become "endangered" if it occupies a particular space, regardless of whether identical animals live in other areas or environments. There are environmentalists who seriously propose shutting down much of the continental United States to human activity, obliterating the rights of the people who own that land, and turning it over to the wild.
A slide show on this process can be seen here.
An example of the proposed process applied to Florida. The brown areas are where humans would be permitted.
Appalachia. Humans are exiled from the red areas.
Worst case scenario if all the proposals were enacted at the same time. Red areas = no people.
These are no longer people trying to clean up rivers and the air. These are professional nihilists, and they are becoming dangerous. I have listed many quotes and references in the past to that effect.
That's why.
It may be simplistic to think along the lines of "If a particular course of action angers a Nazi, it is probably a good idea," but if the people you are dealing with are sworn enemies of the human race, it often is a pretty safe bet.
As for paper, trees are a goddam crop, like corn and wheat. They are grown for paper in specific areas in dedicated forests. You don't make paper out of old-growth redwoods, you make it out of fast-growing trees that are replanted and regrown forever.
