You're forgetting marketing costs
In Hollywood, where no movie has ever actually made a profit (to hear the studio execs tell it), they say it costs about as much to market a movie as it does to make it. If that's the case, then they spend about $100 million on the movie but only grossed $60 million in the US. Hardly sounds like a success to me. Of course, that's not accounting for overseas markets or video sales, so in the end the movie will probably at least break even.
As for him speaking his mind, he's free to do so at any time. Guess what, we're free to speak our minds, too. Freedom of speech doesn't mean freedom from criticism, especially when what he says is so patently silly from a historical perspective.
