Current Events » in reply to Pro-war motivation not the point of the post

We have very well organized peace churches around here.

You know the ones:

They don't send Bibles abroad. They send doctors and nurses, and carpenters and engineers, all members of their congregations. They don't preach: they aid. (One little girl I know who's a member of one of these churches, about 7 years old, said earnestly, "Mother says we should serve God in practical ways.") These are regular family people who go into poverty-stricken areas of Asia, South America and Africa risking disease and injury. My own doctor was shot at while working at clinics in Peru.

They are affiliated with other congregations around the country. They run private relief agencies.

They oppose war on principle, and are not afraid to say so in public.

They have no Marxist agenda, nor any sympathy for Marxism.

They are not "tools of Saddam". They are not "useful idiots". They are not sentimentally driven.

They are Christians who take Christianity very very seriously. They believe that the only behavior we can control is our own.

They too are part of the anti-war movement. Because they are anti-war.

Some people who oppose this war do so because they oppose America. Some oppose it because they oppose George W. Bush. Some oppose it because they are internationalists who look at world affairs from a different perspective. Some oppose it because they are worried about the economic impact it will have on the US. Some people oppose this war because they are morally opposed to war. Though the public position is the same -- opposition to the war -- the motivations vary, no matter what spin is put on it by media of any political camp.

Mary Anne
