Re: All countries are not created equal

"*--another technical point, a bit offtopic: About the name...the Gulf War was aptly named because it was a regional conflict about Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. "Gulf War II" would be inappropriate now because it's specifically a war with Iraq. The most accurate name for this war would be simply "The US-Iraq War". However, I've noticed that Bush and his people aren't keen on accuracy in terminology and might prefer the more obfuscatory "Gulf War II" for its association with a war that did have broad international support."

Or Gulf War part one; Gulf war part two

"Thanks for the list that actually shows that this so-called "coalition of the willing" is really just a propaganda device."

You could say the same for the coalition in the Gulf War I.
Without the US intervention, Kuwait would have ceased to exist and would have become part of Iraq (if "enough" countries recognized this). It was US power which pushed Iraq out of Kuwait- the coalition was emphasized for PR purposes (or "just a propaganda device").
You could say that the existence of any nation "is really just a propaganda device".
Any nation needs to recognized by other nations before it exists. Israel still doesn't exist according to some nations. Currently the regime in Iraq doesn't "really" exist as far as the US is concerned. Any new regime in Iraq needs to be recognized by other nations before it can exist- it's possible that France won't recognize any new regime in Iraq; the US did not recognize the ruling Afghanstan govt as legitimate [prior to the US occuping it and helping to put in the new leadership].
Btw, this "explains" one of Iraq's rationals for invading Kuwait- Iraq didn't recognize Kuwait as a country (or so they say:). There was a very interesting map behind a Iraq speaker (a saw on TV) it showed all Arab countries as apparently one country-
I guess it's a matter of perception:)
