Went out for a walk just now, away from my home wifi. Found that I had the full Google map set, including satellite, though the quality of satellite tiles was patchy. I assume that depends on what I've previously viewed and is in the cache.
Zoomed way out, and saw a square of cached maps, then a wilderness with the occasional city name. Makes sense it wouldn't try to store the world's maps inside a little microSD card. But wait! Under settings in Google maps I found a "Labs" section, which signals "experimental", and let me turn on manual precaching. Works smoothly. I went north (on the map) to San Francisco, tapped the middle of the city then performed several incantational finger swipes and taps to tell it precache, and voila, in a few seconds it showed a 10-mi wide square on the map where it had downloaded map data. I was so jazzed I went and downloaded 10 mile plots around all my friends.
Score one more for the Android.
