You said you work at a college, and the environment is not a healthy one for mental clarity in some areas, even if you only work there.
If you have trouble with a decision tree that has only two forks, say so. Assuming that there must be a third fork can be argued forever.
For the record, the last 12 years was largely occupied with trying out all the "alternatives" available on fixing the situation in Iraq, and ending up pretty much exactly the same place: facing a decision with two choices. Drag his ass out, or leave him alone.
