Very Tough Call

I have a question about a couple of your points...

You said, "I think it is an unwritten duty of a reporter to report crimes against humanity when they exist."

I agree, but does that hold true even when reporting on those crimes against humanity would result in nothing more than additional atrocities?

You also commented that, "Maybe at a minimum, they should leak the story to a Matt Drudge with names, dates, and other details removed to protect the innocent...undoubtedly the story won't be given the same credence as if it were posted on the front page of the NYT in such a circumstance, but at least it would get out into the public domain."

Again, I agree that it would have been great to get the story out. But even if done by this method, odds are that there were very few in Iraq who would have access to whatever information was being revealed. Those with access to the info would have surely been rounded up, guilty or not, and summarily tortured and killed.

The end result to that would ultimately be a true horror story, that is quickly dismissed by the majority of people. Not only that, but the inside source of that information is dead so that he can never tell the story again, even at a time like the present, when it would have been safe.
