This style is called "citation", in which one finds supporting facts, compatible opinions, and expert analyses upon which to base one's own interpretation of a situation, and in which to frame one's own questions. The idea is to keep as close to factual argument as possible, in order to avoid destructive diversions into character assassination.
The style is compatible with civil scholarly debate. Is it the civil part, the scholarly part or the debate part that you didn't agree to?
