The political statement made by the ALA, if you had been interested in reading from the website, is that censorship is incompatible with its mission, and that being politically manipulated by representatives of either side is also. I haven't heard yet what the outcome of the ALA International Relations Committee meeting on Cuba was, but it was only last week. Observe, please, what the Cuban librarians' panel discussion was about: bottom of page 1, continued on page 2. The professional statement made was that calling one's self a librarian is not the equivalent of study and training, and that the only people qualified to discuss libraries in Cuba are librarians from Cuba. No, we are not prohibited from responding to anything. Nor am I required to continue to discuss this with someone who has no interest in looking at my profession as anything that even remotely requires credentials.
