re: Fine. Let's just shoot everybody.

Journalists during the ground war taped TV to their vehicles. I often wondered what kept Iraqi soldiers from doing the same. What would keep an Iraqi missile toting geurrila from mimicking the camaramen?

No doubt they would do exactly that, the same way they mimicked medical vehicles and civilians during the war before they suddenly attacked. Their tactics often rely on the fact that our troops will not commit wholesale and random slaughter of suspected enemies.

From the article, "Inside the Resistance," posted by Greg:

Ahmed: "Once I passed through three American checkpoints in a pick-up that was half-filled with explosives and weapons. They didn't even look."

Haqi: "One night I was driving during the curfew hours with a box of grenades in the car. The Americans stopped me and I told them that my wife was in the hospital. 'Go, go,' they yelled without searching the car. We thank God they are so stupid."

Stupid. Yeah, I guess that's us. Our compassion and civilized behavior is used against us by creatures that think nothing of wrapping bombs around their children.

Yet Americans are the ones condemned around the world for barbarism, including by the American Left, often with a defense of the "Iraqi resistance" thrown in for good measure.

If we were the barbarians everyone thinks we are, we could have erased Iraq from the face of the earth without a single Marine leaving the U.S. Somehow this little fact seems to escape everyone.

Please go to the link posted by Larry above. I think that makes the case better than anything else about how this kind of mistake could easily happen. Again, as SDG points out, any remedies, like painting cameras orange or something, will be quickly applied to RPG munitions by the enemy.
