I'm surprised you seem to believe that this terrible incident will be brushed under the rug. It is being investigated. If the soldier involved is found to have acted improperly, he will be punished. Contrary to popular opinion, the US military does take this stuff seriously.
A big part of the investigation will focus on what happened and how it can be prevented from happening again. For example, was the cameraman in a position where he could've been confused with a combatant? If so, then perhaps other camera crews can be taught how to avoid looking like a combatant. It worked with the embedded reporters. It can work again.
Fatique and fear are a certainty in a combat zone. Was the soldier trigger-happy? Did he act rashly? The cameraman's videotape survived the incident and may provide a lot of useful information.
