re: PS re: the Taliban and "alternative solutions"

Do you think going to war with Saudi Arabia to install a democracy would cause more harm or good? I think it would cause more harm. Do I think SA needs a change in form of government? - Yes. Is it a situation justifying our involvement base don doing the most good? - No. Should the Taliban have been stopped earlier in my opinion? - Yes. I do not claim the US has always intervened when it should or has never intervened where it shouldn't. The US was grossly negligent in its abandonement of Afghanistan IMO.

Unfortunately there is also the matter of practicality. There is a lot of oppression in the world, it is not always easy to make judgements on what the people want and whether a stable postwar government is possible, and the US can't afford unlimited military spending without negatively impacting our own population. Many people do not think the US should be the world's policeman. I do, but only in limited cases of high clarity like Iraq, Afghanistan, Ruanda, and the former Yogoslavia. I also think it requires broad international support which is unlikely due to jealousy in France and Russia as well as counter interest in China.

Mark
