I don't have that book. Can you summarize?
Let's forge an international alliance to stop the international sale of weaponry. Period. Let's put the sale of arms in the same category as spreading terrorism.
Stop the international sale of guns, missiles, military aircraft, military ships and submarines...the whole nine yards. Then, the next generation of tinpot dictators will be armed with potato guns and sling shots.
A swell idea. Can you get Russia, China, North Korea, and all the rest to agree? Weapons sales add up to a BIG chunk of cash for the nations that do it, including billions of dollars coming to U.S. companies and workers. Who wants to be first?
A LOT of info on weapons sales can be found in this paper. I myself have only looked at the tables so far, but they are informative.
A sidebar: If you were to ask the average person who sold Iraq most of its weapons over the years, I would bet they would say "The United States." Certainly any liberal or leftist would probably say so.
Check out this paper for some background on where Iraq got its conventional arms. This table is also interesting.
Further...let's put all nuclear power facilities under international control. Want a nuke plant? Fine, no prob, but it'll be built, run and protected by an internationally-constituted agency. Not only will you have your electricity, but you'll never have to touch the hot glowing stuff.
And which agency would you trust with this? The United Nations? In point of fact there already are international organizations, including some associated with the U.N., charged with keeping an eye on this sort of thing. They don't have a lot of enforcement power, though. That's when you call in the Israelis. ;)
