Holy cow CIA is asking Justice to investigate the White House for national security breaches? Seems like every time I've proclaimed something a Big Deal in the past few weeks, someone has come up with a good reason why it isn't. (My old boss once commented that I didn't have particularly acute "political antennae," which is all too true.) But let me just go out on a limb here and say that this is a big deal. Not that it's going to go anywhere: I can't imagine the political leadership at Justice pursuing this with much alacrity -- oh, for an Independent Counsel -- and even if they did, I'm pretty sure some White House functionary would just take the fall. But upon reflection, how could a functionary take the fall? Who in the Executive branch has access to names of CIA undercover personnel? It must be a comparatively small circle, and it must be a comparatively authoritative circle. The prospects for a credible low-level fall guy seem rather thin. If there was wrongdoing, then, then the hope for evasion of discovery really does lie in foot-dragging or incompetence at DoJ. Whatever else this ends up being, it will certainly be a test of the politicization of the Executive branch at the Cabinet level and below. And if someone did purposefully blow Valerie Plame's cover, that person richly deserves jailing. Whomever he may be. re
