We have an obligation to treat them wih courtesy, respect, and fairness, just like we should treat everybody else.

I do understand where Maupin is coming from. I've read several of his books, about life in San Francisco before the AIDS epidemic. (the "Barbary Lane" series). They were quite entertaining.
