Concorde and Columbia

Compare Concorde to the Space Shuttle:-

Both are products of huge government-funded initiatives to gain access to better-faster-sexier travel methods.

Both went hugely over budget and were never commercial.

Both flew for many years and have a constituency of loving supporters.

Both had fatal accidents due to low error margins and uncontrollable complexity in the high-tech, high-performance design.

Both are children of the 60's.

The difference?

Concorde has been retired with grace and dignity.

NASA still claim they will refly the Shuttle

My Prediction?

The Shuttle will never refly because the wing leading-edge vulnerability cannot be addressed without a hugely expensive redesign and rebuild of the whole wing. (Note that NASA is trumpeting success in the totally-irrelevant issue of surface tile repair. Without leading-edge repair, this is as useful as putting tea-cosies in the liferafts of the Titanic).

Or perhaps a few token flights, like the temporary return to service of Concorde, but the end has arrived.

Moves on: nor all thy Piety nor Wit
Shall lure it back to cancel half a Line
Nor all thy Tears wash out a Word of it.

(BTW, never flew on Concorde. Wish I had, but missed my chance. I hope humankind never reaches this moment of regret wrt space travel...)
