Poverty is rough! Film at 11:00.
"In families that moved out of poverty, parents were better able to supervise their children, apparently leading to fewer behavioral symptoms," Costello says. "Poverty or any other single factor can't fully explain the development of such symptoms."
It isn't the money as much as it is the inability to keep an intact family situation to raise the kids in.
It goes without saying that through no fault of their own, many modern poor families either have single parents, or parents who are both forced to work full time.
Many older people I know were brought up in what would now be considered poverty, but with the two-parent, one-at-home family traditional at the time. Why this was more prevalent even among the poor years ago is a whole separate discussion. Not a lot of delinquents from that environment. Interestingly, most of these people never thought of themselves as "poor," although any objective analysis of their situation would have come to that conclusion.
Then, just for fun, we can take a look at the kids from wealthy families where parents aren't home or don't care.
