The dark area (in this photo) looks to be much closer the equator then 30 degrees. The confusion here is the timing of it. It's not a common thing to see about Jupiter. Comet is the easy answer. Levey comet was rust red spots this is black, judging by what little data we have.
You seen one comet crash in to Jupiter you seen them all. (not)
